Kaiser Associates was founded in 1981 by Michael M. Kaiser, as a spin-off from Strategic Planning Associates (now Oliver Wyman Consulting).

Michael Kaiser started Kaiser Associates with a simple yet powerful mission: to help companies make more informed strategic and operational decisions by incorporating external insight and analysis. From the very beginning, Kaiser Associates specialized in “fact-based” strategy development and performance improvement.

In the early 1980s, Kaiser Associates helped pioneer the field of Benchmarking. By 1985 we were widely recognized as the world leader in the field. We published the very first book on the subject, Beating the Competition: A Practical Guide to Benchmarking, and led over 200 benchmarking engagements in the years 1982 to 1985 alone. In addition to the specific application of Benchmarking, we continued to broadly advise clients in strategy development and performance improvement.

In the later 1980s and early 1990s, we expanded the firm’s strategy capabilities into the areas of Growth, Go-to-Market, and M&A / Divestitures.

By the mid 1990s, we were increasingly asked by our clients to extend strategy development into implementation and change management. So, the firm developed strong implementation capabilities, including process and organizational transformation. We also built a distinct Economic Development practice focused on national / regional governments and multilateral agencies.

Today, Kaiser Associates continues to grow. Our leaders are long-tenured consultants who continue to advise clients on a wide variety of strategic challenges and opportunities. Our reputation for delivering superior work and exceptional results continues to fuel our growth.
